Studio
Established in 2023, by architect Lorna Gibson - Tjebbes, ‘Studio Locus’, means ‘the study of space’ in Latin. We design meaningful, restorative and inclusive spaces as a result of research. As designers we have the power to create new living environments affecting individuals, communities and larger ecosystems. We therefore also have the responsibility to protect the human experience of place and the tabula scripta. We believe that the future of heritage-worthy architecture lies in empathetic design and new forms of local craftsmanship.
Our experience spans from cultural and domestic buildings to interiors and installations. Each project centralises the user and attempts to enrich their experience of the physical world around them.
Our studio is located in the creative breeding ground of NDSM-loods in Amsterdam-Noord.
Design
Studio Locus is dedicated to making well-conceived and thoughtfully detailed architecture for forward-thinking clients equally enthusiastic about design. Working predominantly in the cultural and housing sectors, current projects include the manifesto for a community hub in the South East of Amsterdam, a summer house on the outskirts of Amsterdam, and architectural research into architecture and identity.
The work of the studio is broad, spanning conceptual design commissions and project feasibility through to full project delivery. A concern for our client’s needs and a commitment to challenge preconceived notions of value are central to our working philosophy.
Technologies
Studio Locus thinks creatively together with our clients as to how technology can be integrated into a design. Attempting where possible to work with innovative, recycled, and sustainable materials and methods. And where possible to minimize (mechanical) installations and utilize the natural conditions of the building design and environmental context.
Narratives
We are trained to listen, translate, create, curate and innovate. We are dedicated to aiding the client, the contractor, and third parties in realising beautiful and meaningful spaces. We strive towards realising projects with an economical, sustainable and social balance. Every place and space has a history worth respecting and celebrating. Our designs expose what already exists and enables it to continue thriving for generations to come.
